The Continuing Adventures Of Rod Hathway – Space Detective.

Earlier this year, I posted a blog about Rod Hathway, the most hated and feared space detective in all the universe. Criminals literally crap their pants at the mention of his name. For a refresher, refer back to this:

Today’s comic blog picks up Rod’s story in issue 3 of “Space Detective”. The three stories contained in the issue are all intertwined.

The story starts with the “Pearl Ship of Death”. It’s Rod’s secretary Dot’s birthday, so Rod gives her a pearl necklace from Neptune. Suddenly, a call comes in from the Interplanetary Police for the Space Detective and Teena (Rod’s and Dot’s crimefighting aliases). It seems that someone is robbing the pearl fisheries of Neptune. They immediately hop a transport where they run into a traveling theatrical troupe feature Chameleon, a master of disguise and Xaga, a mole woman from Jupiter. While the troupe is putting on a show that night, Chameleon’s men take over the ship and he rob’s Tenna of her pearl necklace at raygun point. Apparently Chameleon is a master criminal! He’s also after the ships pearl currency, but Space Detective thwarts his plan and is about to capture him when Xaga ambushes Teena and forces SP (Space Detective) to save her. Apparently the two are in cahoots together. They get away, but Teena is pissed that her pearls were stolen and now has “a score to settle”. Tough words from a tough lady.

The story picks up next with the “Sea Nymphs of Neptune”. SD and Teena pick up the trail of Chameleon as it leads them to the fisheries of Neptune. Sea Nymphs have been disappearing and others claim that they were abducted by Octo-Monsters (Octopus’s). SD and Teena decide to investigate by diving with the Nymphs. While submerged they come across an Octo-Monster, but SD remarks “there’s something queer about this”. Indeed there is. The Octo-Monsters are actually robotic monsters controlled by Chameleons men and abducting the Nymphs for their pearls! What villany! SD and Teena follow one back to an underground base where they confront Chameleon, but alas he escapes in his rocketship, leaving Teena to say “I’ll get my pearls back yet from that fellow”. Boy she is spunky!

The final chapter is titled “Mole Woman of Jupiter”. As SD and Teena reach Jupiter, they are told that the Mole people, who are usually very timid, have become murderous bandits led by Chameleons partner Xaga, alias the Mole woman. The mole people attack SD and Teena but are easily defeated by them. Teena threatens to kill Xaga with her raygun unless she leads them to Chameleon. Being a coward, she does. SD and Chameleon stage an epic battle and SD finally defeats him with a swift uppercut to the chin. Teena grabs her pearls back from “that rotten thief” and the galaxy is once again saved by Rod Hathway, Space Detective and Teena. Huzzah!

Thanks for reading about this epic adventure. Come back on Sunday for more Bobby Orr.

Is it me or does the bud buy look like Frankenstein’s Monster in those panels?

  6. The Goog says:

Oops, I meant bad guy, not bud buy.

  7. Gary says:

He actually does. But that makes sense since Chameleon is a master of disguise.
