Spooning with Bobby Orr

For those of you who know me and have been to my condo, you know that I have alot of Bobby Orr memorabilia. I don’t have everything though and probably never will. I’m sure as heck going to try to collect as much as I can however.

There are Orr items out there that I know about but don’t have yet. However, every once in awhile I’ll come across an Orr collectible that I’ve never seen before. When that happens, my desire to get it increases ten fold.

This weeks post is about one of those items. For you viewing pleasure, the Bobby Orr silver spoon.

Orr Spoon 3-crop-crop

This is a regular spoon with Bobby Orr’s face, his name and the Bruins logo engraved in it. Here is a little better picture coutesy of my buddy Dave (www.ToyNerd.com)

Made by International @ Company of Canada sometime in the early 1970’s, this is about as a unique Orr collectible as you’re going to find.

Here are a few more pictures.

So what’s the story behind this spoon? To be honest I have no idea. I won this on Ebay recently, beating out 17 other bidders. When I saw it my first reaction was that it looked cool and must be a pretty rare item. After I won it, one of my friends, a fellow Orr collector who also happened to bid on it emailed me and said that another member of or fraternity (Orr Collectors) has a similar spoon but in gold.

I immediately contacted him looking for information, but he didn’t know the origin of the spoon either. He did however send me some pictures of the gold spoon.

Orr Gold 2

Orr Gold

Our best guess is that these two spoons were either a promotional item or a salesman’s sample, made up to gage interest among the companies clients.

I have never seen the spoons in my years of Orr collecting and have no idea how many exist. These could be the only two as far as I know. I kind of hope not because as a collector I would love to have the gold spoon as well. Perhaps some day I’ll discover that there’s also a Bobby Orr fork and knife. It would only make sense right?

Thanks as always for reading and be sure to check back next week for more of my Bobby Orr collection.

That is pretty cool! The gold one is quite nice too, I hope you are able to get your hands on one!

I love the picture of the back of your spoon, you can clearly see the person (you? Dave?) who took the pic reflected in the curve of the spoon.

  2. Gary says:

Thanks The Goog! I’ll take credit for the picture of the back of the spoon. Dave took the close ups for me. I’m hoping to get the gold one too, but unless another one pops up, I don’t think my friend and fellow Orr collector will part with his. I’m not complaining though. I’m lucky to have the silver one.

  3. Scifinds says:

So how interested would you be in actually spooning Mr. Orr? These are the real questions folks want answered.

  4. Gary says:

I think you’re the only one who wants to know that. I would like to meet Mr. Orr, shake his hand and talk some hockey with him. We’ll leave it at that.

  5. Kelly says:

Great find …nice way to sweeten up your morning bowl of cereal !

  6. Gary says:

Lol Kelly! Now there’s a thought. Would using the spoon make my food taste better? Probably not. It will display nicely though.

  7. Matt says:

Be honest, what was the first type of soup you ate with that spoon?

  8. Gary says:

I have not used the spoon to eat and have no plans to unless for some strange reason all my other spoons disappear. If I was to eat soup with it though it would be Italian Wedding Style soup.

Bobby Orr spoon was made by International
Silver Co. (the letter after INTERNATIONAL is an S for Silver) – original idea was my Dad’s – he was the advertising manager at that time and there were not many made (mine does not have the Bruins logo but the picture is excellent). I believe that the item was proposed to be a product premium at the time.

  10. Gary says:

Thanks for the info James! Great idea by your dad! It’s a shame that not many were produced, but I’m very happy to have one of them.
