Oshawa Orr

Every once in awhile I’ll come across an Orr item on Ebay that I immediately know is pretty rare. Usually that means two things: I’m going to bid on it if I already don’t have it and I’m going to end up spending a good amount of money on it.

Lately there have been more than a few Orr collectibles that have come up that you don’t see very often. One such item was listed a few months ago that according to my friend and Orr collector Danny, had only been the second one that he’s ever seen. Needless to say, it went to the top of my want list. Thankfully, I ended up winning it.

Here it is.

Here we have a pretty rare Orr Oshawa Junior card from 1964-1965. It’s roughly the size of a postcard, measuring    4 1/4 x 6 1/4. It has a blank back and was promoted by CKLB which was an Oshawa radio station and sponsored by Crown Life which was an insurance company.

These cards came out for the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons. Orr’s teammates were also featured on these cards and some of them can be found on Ebay at the moment. There are differences between the two years. The biggest being that on the 1965-66 card, the players name and Oshawa are spaced differently. Also, the ‘65-’66 card lists the players position.

As I alluded to earlier in the post, I knew I would have to spend a good deal of money to win this. Turns out I was right. If you ever see one of these, expect to spend a couple hundred dollars at a minimum.

Special thanks to Danny who provided me with the information on these cards.

Thanks for reading this week. Check back in again next week for some more Bobby Orr collectibles.

Interesting piece, were these given out at games or did people have to buy them? It seems odd to me that the backs were blank, so I assume it was a give away.

  2. Gary says:

Right you are Goog. They were most likely inserted into the Oshawa home programs. I forgot to incluse that little piece of information in the post.

  3. Danny says:

    Hey Gary
    A correction about these photos.
These were program inserts that were inserted in the Oshawa home game programs for 2 years, 1965-66 and 1966-67.
The Orr comes from the 1965-66 year, there was no Bobby Orr for 1966-67.
I received the info from a serious Oshawa Generals collector that bought a whole bunch off me to finish off his sets.
He remembers very clearly that they were indeed inserted in the home game programs.
He told me he has the Orr so that’s 3 of us that have it.
It is definitely a very rare piece that is a pre-rookie card.

  8. Gary says:

Hi Robert. Depending on the condition, I’ve seen them sell on Ebay for between $50 – $150. Thanks for the question.
