Skating with Bobby Orr

Earlier this month while I was doing my daily due diligence on Ebay, I came across an Orr item that I’ve been looking for for a long time. Actually, let me clarify that. I wasn’t looking for this specific item, but any item from what it represents. I know that’s a little confusing, but stick with me here.

Anyhow, I won said item and here it is.

This is a poster from the 1985 Bobby Orr Skate-A-Thon to benefit the mentally handicapped. This particular event took place in Winnipeg and was sponsoredby the Winnipeg Jets and Nabisco Brands. Measuring approximately 16 x 20, it’s mounted on poster board and it’s inscribed by Orr to the Jets organization, which you can better see in this picture.

A few other items from this particular event include the following.

This pinback button.

Orr Skate a Thon

A brochure for the event.

The brochure actually belongs to a good friend and Orr collector whose collection of Orr items is amazing. I’ve feature some of his acquisitions in the past and will continue doing so in the future. Check out this past post to see some of his items:

Going back to the skate-a-thon for a moment. There have been many held over the years that have benefited multiple charitable organizations. Posters, brochures, buttons and sweatshirts have been made up for each of these events. I have some of the sweatshirts and buttons, but I’ve never had the chance to own one of the posters until now so I was eager to win this. My fellow Orr collector mentioned above has alot of the Orr skate-a-thon items that I don’t, including posters from other skates. I’ll be featuring some of his items in future posts. That is I will if he lets me. You see, unbeknownst to me at the time, I outbid him on this particular Orr poster. I’m just joking when I say that he won’t let me feature some of his items. All us Orr collectors pretty much know that on certain items that pop up on Ebay there’s a good chance we’ll be bidding against one another. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. If you lose out on it you just hope that the same item will come up again at some point.

Thanks as always for checking in this week. More great Orr items will be featured in the weeks ahead.

Is that an authentic inscription on the poster? If it is does that add to the value? I know in comics it can be totally hit or miss. Nice score though.

  2. Gary says:

As far as I can tell it is authentic. On a piece like this it definitely adds value to it.

This is the first handwritten note by Orr I have seen, I only see typed letters and then signed by him. This item can only increase in value. What a jewel.
and where did the Jets end up??

  4. Gary says:

It is a very nice looking piece and should look even better once I get it framed. The Jets are now the Phoenix Coyotes. They moved their in 1996.

  5. The Goog says:

Wow, that’s a great poster! I’m looking forward to seeing it framed too.

  6. Gary says:

In the procees of doing that.
